NSW: Opposition says govt removing hot water taps to save money
SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - The NSW government was removing hot water taps in at least onepublic hospital to save money, opposition health spokeswoman Jillian Skinner said today.
"We've received information from a whistleblower, very concerned about the situationat Hornsby Hospital where the government has turned off hot water taps in the staff toiletto save money," Mrs Skinner told reporters.
"I'm told the taps have been taken away because there isn't enough money to fit a regulatorto adjust the temperature."
Mrs Skinner said the taps were removed from all staff toilets and the hospital's physiotherapydepartment.
"Now this is a desperate day when a government has to turn off hot water in a hospitalbecause there isn't enough money."
But NSW Health Minister Craig Knowles dismissed the accusation, saying a safety auditfound the water temperature was too high and had to be cooled for children before anyinjuries occurred.
"The community child health centre at Hornsby has had its hot water taps removed afew days ago so thermostatic mixing valves could be installed so children didn't get scalded,"
Mr Knowles told reporters.
"I think it's a demonstration of how toey they're getting in the coalition about (theseat of) Hornsby if they try to turn a child safety issue into a political football."
The taps were being reinstalled today, Mr Knowles.
