Toyota Motor Co. traditionally has allowed its powerful Japanese chief engineers to have the final say in product development. Even with products designed specifically for the United States, crucial decisions were made in Japan.
For the Avalon, however, Toyota split the chief engineering duties between the two continents. Shigetoshi Miyoshi handled the platform and powertrain responsibilities, while Ed Mantey was responsible for the rest of the car.
